Obama outlines vision for high-speed rail network
--The Associated Press (Great idea, but will it ever get done? The administration appears to be more interested in bailing out the auto industry, the banks, the McMansion makers and every other unsustainable business and practice that created the problem we're now stuck in. Where is the real money for the real change? --DB)

Two Days After Inauguration: Is Obama’s Iraq Timetable Already Dead?
--Antiwar (To be clear, the plan never called for withdrawing all U.S. forces. Despite the hoopla, Obama's war policy is extraordinarily similar to Bush's. The plan is to leave 60,000 - 80,000 combat troops in Iraq as a 'residual' force. Of course, with the 'good guy' in office, many opponents of occupation will no doubt become supporters. --DB)

U.S. Rejected Aid for Israeli Raid on Iranian Nuclear Site
--The New York Times ("But the tense exchanges also prompted the White House to step up intelligence-sharing with Israel and brief Israeli officials on new American efforts to subtly sabotage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, a major covert program that Mr. Bush is about to hand off to President-elect Barack Obama.")

44 to reverse 43's executive orders
--Politico (Unfortunately it is not as easy as just revoking orders. Bush's directives have spawned a wide range of policies. Complex and controversial spying programs, data-mining operations, detention facilities, covert escapades overseas, etc...the entire "war on terror" is based on a radical interpretation of law, executive power and preemptive war. Only time will tell what type of change the Obama Administration is able and willing to bring about. --DB)

Start-ups put farm debris to use as fuel
--USA Today (Another wonderful idea from our friends in the ethanol industry. Of course, this debris is needed to prevent soil erosion. Take too much out and the farmland dies. Our bellies will be just as empty as our gas tanks if we're not careful. Also see " Peak Soil." --DB)
